I just found the greatest gift for my son. It's a book called "Larry Gets Lost in Seattle" each page has a few sentences toward the plot as well as a few explaining the landmark that the lost dog is near. I dont know if there are book out there like this for other cities but I think is a good gift for parents who don't live close to their child.
I'm still working out what to get for my son's brother and will probably pick up something small for their parents during my black friday shopping.

The Meg Cabot books are good. Pretty clean but for older readers. If you are looking for book ideas I have a million of them.
