The adoptive parents and I have been e-mailing back and forth since the adoption on Oct. 1st and I asked them if I could visit. I guess what I'd like to know is how the first visit for birthparents has been with the adoptive parents in an open adoption. I'm really nervous/excited/confused...

I'm an adoptive parent, not a birthparent, but I just wanted to let you know that I am always nervous when we have visits. I'm always afraid I'll say the wrong thing, either to my children or their birthfamilies, or that I'll somehow hurt the birthfamily. Open adoptions can be wonderful, but also stressful for everyone.

My first visit was nervous to begin with, but after a few minutes we were all like a big family. We were really really comfortable with each other before birth, but both a bit nervous about that first post placement visit. It went great. Better than the one following. The one following I was working on some emotional issues so it was a bit more akward for me.

For me it was nerve wracking, but I think that was partly because the visit coincided with our wedding. My fiance wanted our son and his adoptive family there, and so they came. It was an emotional and stressful time, because of the wedding and because I got to meet this unknown 2 year old for the first time. It was very uncomfortable at first, but we got over it. The hardest thing was seeing the little boy I care about more than just about anything not even give a hoot who I was.
