Can you help?
I hope it is okay for me to post here. As part of our entrance into a domestic adoption program, we have been asked to read two books about adoption. They would like us to read at least one book that discusses adoption from the birthparent (expectant parent?) point of view. Do you have any suggestions for books that we should read?

I highly recommend The Girls Who Went Away by Ann Fessler. Although it focuses on the closed era of adoptions between the 1950s thru the 1970s, it is still very relevant to the current times. Ann interviewed hundreds of birthmoms, and although adoption has changed a great deal since those times, the feelings and experiences voiced by the birthmoms still echo in today's world. A lot of the birthmothers here on the forums who relinquished in the past 10 years, for example, find they relate a lot to the women in the book.
If you can't find the book at your public library, Amazon sells it for pretty cheap. I got my hardcover copy from Amazon for about $7. ![]()

The Girls who went away is an incredible book. As an adoptee I would like to give you my suggestion on the second book...The Primal Wound by Nancy Verrier...
Kind regards, Dickons |

Lifegivers by Gritter is my vote. It talks about contemporary first moms.

First mom to the amazing Kiddo and adopted adult. 1-4-2009 Mom and I visit Kiddo despite the bad weather. He really loved the blue mittens I made him and even helped me plan my living room. Apparently Hot Wheels wallpapper is the way to go. 2-16-2009 I got a promotion, that comes with a raise. Mom and Dad are visiting and we're going to Al's for pie to celebrate. 4-27-2009 Dad surprises me with a Lady Ugly Stick (an awesome fishing rod that is pink) and a 2nd Iowa Light Artillery Battery jacket. I'm a lucky girl! 5-30-2009 Kiddo turns five. It is hard to believe he is that old already, it seems like just yesterday he was being born. I was at peace for the first time on his birthday, what a nice feeling. 6-13&14 2009 A cannon live fire in Casper WY. We got third place and I got to see Devil's Tower for the first time, it was pretty awesome. 7-4-2009 Amelia the kitten comes to live with me and Liz. Talk about jealousy, Liz will adjust though. |

I'm ALL about the Lifegivers too. I thought it was a fabulous book and my copy is covered in highlighting and scribbled notes in the margins. There were many times where I though, "yes! THAT describes my experience as a first mom!"
