Yes, you can. Parents can choose to make an adoption plan for any child, regardless of that child's age. The laws are exactly the same, except in some states the parents have less time after signing their rights away to change their minds when the child is older.

It may take longer to find adoptive parents for that child - most want infants. But there are adoptive parents who are looking for older children, too - so it may take longer but it's certainly possible.

If you have found yourself in the position of having to make an adoption plan for an older child (or are in any way involved with the adoption of an older child), I do recommend that you find a way for the child to receive counseling - starting before being told of the decision, and that the child continue that counseling at least until their adoption by new parents is finalized.

A child this age will never forget who you are. They will likely remember phone numbers, names of family members etc.

A child this age may wonder their whole lives what they did wrong that you would give them up, throw them away, not love them any more.

Now least you think I am being mean. I was adopted by a stepfather. My mother told me constantly that my father didn't love me that was why he gave me away.

Why on earth would you give up a 7-10 year old?

Is there no grandparent, aunt or uncle who would take them for you? Someone the child knows and loves? A friend who always cared about the child?

My step dau came to live with up when she was 14/15.
Her mother's boyfirend didn't like the younger kids and the boy 11 and the teen came to our house one afternoon.

You cannot imagine the harshness this girl felt losing her mother over some man. Drugs, pregnacies, abortion. She was in her 30s before she got her life straight.

I hope you can find another way, medical help, financial help, what ever you need. Or a loving relative or friend.

Oh, when I was thirty five, my father, the man who supposedly had given me up, adopted me back into his family.

I was 7 when stepdad adopted me, 35 when father adopted me to the name I was born with.
