OT - Oprah, show about children's insecurities...
Did anyone catch this? It started out as a topic about a 3 year old girl obsessed with her looks... It then went on to a teenage model who was gorgeous, but felt so ugly inside... Anyhoo... the therapist ended up saying, that your emotional and psychological injuries are passed on through the birth canal to our children... So they figured out that because the teenage girls' mother had never felt good about herself because her mom always told her she wasn't good enough... and because the girl's mother herself always talks about how she's ugly and fat... this has made the beautiful girl think she is ugly, because our wounds are passed on ten fold to our children... Did anyone see this? The therapist is real I know, but does everyone buy this?
I do, to a certain degree I guess, but I would love to hear everyone's opinions, even if you haven't seen the show ![]() |

Yes, I absolutely buy that!!!
![]() Not just in that "nurture" way.. but I think it is also passed genetically. I have quite a few genetic theories though. Ask me in 20 years which turned out to be true. I dont think that is it the birth canal.. lol but I assume that is a metaphor for genetics. |

No, I don't buy this. It's a result of women telling her daughter she's ugly and fat, and then the grandchild picking up on her mom's insecurities.
It's a result of the media and how they portray girls/women, and of society in general's pressure to be a thin, beautiful person blah blah blah. Granted...I think genetics plays a part in many things...but this? nope.

In my opinion on the matter, inecurities come from our surroundings, be it television, peers or family members.

I think you can have a genetic pre-disposition to be insecure. And that the other stuff just triggers that.

Must admit I put it mostly down to, in this case, of the mum putting her down but of cause the media and peer pressure doesn't help in general. My mother put me down for years stating I was useless and stupid which I believed yet I managed to pass exams and get a good job after leaving school. Guess I wasn't as stupid and useless as she made out
