I am almost 23 years old and I have an 8 year old son. Because I was so young when I got pregnant and because of threats by my sons biological fathers family, my mother took guardianship of my son. When I was 18 I moved out and have been trying to get my son back ever since. After years of proving that I was responsible and could provide a stable home for my son I finally won that battle and my son and I are now together again, however, my mother still is his legal guardian. I don't know what to do to get back legal custody of my son. I have searched the internet for days on end unsuccessfully. In a moment of frustration I typed in "I want my son back" and this is where it took me. I have been reading other messages and I am greatful to have found this site. If anyone has any information that you think may help me get back custody of my son I thank you in advance.

I think that the best thing for you to do is to contact a lawyer. They will be able to walk you through all the steps that are required, as I suspect it may vary from state to state. Did you mother have temporary guardianship, or did you fully relinquish your rights and she adopted your son? Is your mother fighting you on this? If she isn't it will hopefully be an easy paperwork exercise.

I don't know much about this, but I can direct you to a sight where some women may be able to give you helpful advice and direction on this...go to delphiforums.com and find the 'all about adoption' board.
There is a woman there with the screen name Di (mutherluv) or R/C, and they always seem to have helpful links and I really think they would know how to help out someone in your situation or give you an idea how to get help.
