I would like to be a foster parent but feel like I'd never be approved because I don't make that much money. They say you just have to have enough extra money to support the needs of the child. How is that determined?

money
All I can say is...don't let how much money you make determine your self worth, or your ability to parent. I'm not sure what the laws are where you are, but I know that when I attended my adoption classes, there were several families there that were on social assistance (welfare), and they had obviously been approved to adopt.
Think about all the other families who have their own bio children....many are very poor and have 6 or 7 kids! In addition, if you adopt an older or special needs child, there may be subsidies available to help pay for therapies, medical, prescription drugs, eyeglasses, etc. Please go for it, if that is what's in your heart. Put in the application, and at worst, they will say no. But don't end up 10 yrs from now saying gee....I wish I had. Take care Tam ![]() |

I had the same concerns
I was actually going to ask the same thing my husband and I are looking into fostercare and or adoption and I was afraid that we did not make enough money to do it.

There is usually some kind of income guideline they use. They want to make sure you aren't reliant on the monthly check in order to meet basic needs for you or the child/ren in your care.

Don't let your income stop you from becoming a foster parent. Most states just want to make sure you can handle your money well enough to be able to care for the chile while awaiting reimbursment. There are so many resources availiable to help you understand your state guidelines. I live in Mo and used a search engine to find out all I could. try typing in your state and the words "foster care" and see where it takes you. Sometimes the SW's can be hard to get a hold of, so the internet can be a great route if you have general questions.

We are low income with 3 bio children. We were only asked what are yearly income was. It was obvious we can support ourselves on our income but, no specific questions were asked about our income other than that. We have just been approved to foster to adopt.
