Getting restarted

Hi all! Just wanted to check in.. I was active on these boards a few years back when we were fp. After some fertility heartbreak, we've decided to take a break and we're going to give fostering another go.. with our eyes wide open this time! :-)

The one thing I wanted to ask about.. what do you all do with your household chemicals? We have our closet that holds these items toddler proofed, but it seems like a federal case if you don't have your Windex in something equivalent to Fort Knox. They actually seemed more concerned about our Windex and 409 than my hubby's guns!

Any suggestions would be appreciated! :-)

Welcome back! I'm also returning after many years of taking a break.

Our chemicals are in the cabinet above the microwave or the cabinet above the clothes washer.

If by toddler-proof you mean plastic toddler "locks" I would recommend changing it to a magnetic totlok. I can't imagine anyone would have a problem with that.

We were told to store them high and out of reach. We have some above the fridge and others on a high shelf in the laundry room.

But some states do require them to be locked, so you might want to check.

Welcome back!

We keep ours on a shelf up high in the laundry area and on the top shelf of our pantry - which means I have to use a step stool to reach them because I am short

I have mine up in a kitchen cabinet and installed a magnetic tot lock....those things are cool (I was the dork playing with the new lock when my dad helped me install them) and they have an off position so you can use it when you actually have kids in the house.

Welcome back. I also recommend checking with your CW, since like everything else with fostering this requirement seems to vary a lot by State.

I understand what you mean about having your eyes wide open. We have only been at this for a short time, and now realize how naive we were.

Good luck in your journey!

Just a note on the magnetic locks - they don't work on every door. I got them to put on a door of ours, but the door turned out to be too thick. I think if they were regular cabinet doors it would have been fine.
