certification/ 1st RAD/ADHD placement?
Things have been moving along for us and we should be certified Monday
We are very excited! There is a possibility that we could have our first sibling placement early July, a toddler and a first grader. The eldest has been diagnosed with RAD and ADHD. The youngest seems to 'exhibit normal behaviours' The kids have been in and out of care a few times and currently both parents are incarcerated. The DSS is requesting TPR. The children are in respite care right now. We are excited to possibly have our first placement but honestly, somewhat nervous with the issues of the older child as our first placement. He has been known to have tantrums lasting from 45 minutes to 3 hours. He has been 'kicked out' of daycare for biting and tripping. Does anyone have any advice or experience on children diagnosed with RAD and/or ADHD? Or do you have any book suggestions? Thanks!

Go to a few websites - I don't know if I can post them here...if you google Reactive attachment disorder - you'll find some and read up on attachment parenting. I like Nancy Thomas. Make sure that his CW is giving you access to the therapy he'll need - an attachment therapist...not just a talk therapist. He should have one since he already has the diagnosis. There are many great books as well. When love is not enough by Nancy Thomas and Parenting the Hurt Child by Gregory Keck are a couple of my faves.

So we did get our certification yesterday- woohoo!
The possible placements that I mentioned are still in respite care and a foster family has not been chosen. The DSS that is working to choose their foster family is in a city that is about 1 hr and 15 minutes away from our home, The private agency we are working with is about 45 minutes from our home. Our private agency called us today to let us know that even though the DSS in charge hasn't chosen a family yet their CW is interested in us and thinks we would be a good match for the kids, her only concern is the distance that the in-service workers would have to drive to our home. Our worker said that she doesn't want 'distance' to be the only thing that keeps them from a good match and wants to check to see if we could meet at a half-way point for 'in-service'- possibly at our private agency. Has anyone ever done 'in-service' outside of the home? What is the farthest DSS that you have received placements from? Also, along these questions... I'm curious about visitation since both parents are currently incarcerated. (DSS is requesting TPR) I'm just curious how would visitation would work with incarcerated parents if TPR is denied? Thanks in advance ![]()
