so frustrated!!!
DH and I had one last thing to turn in for our homestudy and that was his physical. The dr. (a walk in, not a family dr.) dx'd him as being "Morbidly Obese" and that it would interfere with the raising of a child.
Yes my husband is a big guy, but we babysit 2 little boys, raised our goddaughter for 10 months, and are quite active. He has NO problems, and has no mobility issues, etc. We go to the park and chase the kids around and go and play ball in our back yard. He doesn't have any health problems (but had high BP today, this is the first time, and because he had it once he also marked that he had it, and that it would interfere with the raising of a child. We've recently made a lifestyle change and are working out more every day and are more knowledgeable about our portions, etc. So now I don't know if we'll be able to get our license because that quack said all of that I just want to help these kiddos out.

If you haven't turned it in, don't. Go find another dr. High blood pressure isn't a reason to deny you because he can take meds for that. Taking a medication isn't a reason for denial either or lots of people wouldn't be fostering or adopting. If you don't have one, go get a family dr. This way you can get some history with a dr and that dr would be able to then ok your DH for the homestudy.

Exactly what I was going to say, Rose!
A family physician will be able to follow what's going on healthwise. It would also be good to have a regular doc if your dh does have hypertension. Btw, that won't disqualify you--mine has it, has for years. He's usually well-controlled, but the doc always gets him back on track. Also, the weight thing--usually not an issue, but it could be. It also contributes to high bp. It's tough, but that's the way it is. You're doing the right thing exercise wise. Keep it up. The classification of morbidly obese is about how many pounds over weight a person is. It is not a judgement, just a statement of the facts based on the height/weight scales. I'm not judging. I struggle with weight issues, too. I'd just be worried about his health if a doc is saying morbidly obese. Get a second opinion. And definitely keep that physical report to yourselves! |

Thanks for the advice.
We are concerned about his health, which is why we're trying to get it under control, but I don't feel that it would hinder his ability to raise a family. He's got an appt. on the 19th, but we figured we might as well go tonite, since I'm turning in the rest of the papers tomm. Oh well, just another week!

The reasons they would be concerned about the morbid obesity is not because he couldn't be a parent, but because of the possible side effects of being placed in that category, the worst of which is to actually die from a heart attack.
Your post reminds me of a Dallas man who was denied adoption of his relative who had been in his care for some time because the judge said he was too fat. Eventually it was overturned, but I thought that was crazy. He had been this child's parent for a long time and because he was fat, the judge didn't think he could be a good parent. Please! I hope you get his figured out soon and back on the road toward that license.

Im with Caddo - my dh is a big guy
with High blood pressure - but he is on meds and his dr knows it's being under control - I say you ask your Resource worker for a new form and you have his regular dr sign off - IMO

I second everything that has been said by the others. My husband has hypertension (controlled by meds) and we have been certified as well. As long as necessary treatment is being received, I don't believe this should stand in anyone's way of being a foster parent.

I worry about similar things as well. From having a couple (awful) back surgeries, I worry that once its time for my physical they wont like what they see. I have two young kids myself and yes, it does get challanging at time, but I know what I can handle and I know what I cant. If that means I have a few extra restrictions, then so be it.
Its a bittersweet situation as I am looking forward to getting this process going, but at the same time, I am scared to death they will deny me because of my condition. I hope you are able to get a 2nd opinion and get the results you are looking for. Good luck. Alina |

I just wanted to update! Hubby went to the dr today and was given a green light.
He got his medical form signed, and the dr was pleased with our progress (we've made some major lifestyle changes recently!) All of our packet paperwork is done now, and we just have to wait to hear on the date for the homestudy :-D YAY!!!
