Got my first call....sorta
I called my case manager today to find out how long before I am officially liscensed. So he goes "Oh yeah. I'm glad you called. I was looking over your paperwork...." Uh Oh!!! Turns out he forgot to have me sign the inspection form when he was here. Well I offer to come by the agency and sign the form and then he tells me that he was actually thinking about me for a case. He said it would just be temporary but I was like...ummm sure. So I go tomorrow to take a look at the file. I texted all my friends to let them know and it was so lame that I don't know the sex, age, or number of kids. LOL. But I will find all that out tomorrow. I already foresee tomorrow being the longest day EVER.

Well, my case manager said that he originally was going to refer an older child (teen) for a 30 day placement but it turns out that it was no longer needed but he had another one he wanted me to consider. He starts telling me about this kid and I'm like "was this the boy who you brought to the training session and me and him were talking about Lil Wayne?" At first he couldn't remember, and I reminded him it was the night they served fried chicken and pasta salad for dinner...lol. That seemed to jog his memory. And yeah...it's the same kid. He's 11 and has some pretty severe needs. He's actually hospitalized right now after his school 302ed him. And once he is released, he will be in a partial program for at least 2 months with wraparound services for school in place prior to that. He was doing ok in his prev foster home until he found out some of his siblings were going home. He's been in care for about 2 years now and if I am doing my math correctly, I will be his 5th foster home not including his 2 hospitalizations. Can you imagine??? It seems that as long as he's on his meds, he's manageable. Just defiant and poor hygiene and pretty aggressive towards his peers. But he's such a little guy. A little big man. We only talked for about half an hour that day but I remember hoping to get a kid like him. Reading his file is scary though. If I had not met him I don't think I'd even be considering accepting him as a placement. And it's so sad because he just wants to go home. Apparently he runs away quite a bit and always goes home. If I decide to take this mission, I would do visits at the hospital to transition until he is released. He would be the youngest kid here. My son will be 14 next month and I think we have more in common than his previous placements. I can't imagine a 60 year old foster mom sharing his love of all things Lil Wayne...lol. I have a couple of questions but it seems like I am going to move forward with this. I'm still tripping off the fact that we have already met.

Wow, basimah. It definitely sounds like a tough case. I completely applaud you for the matter of fact way you're considering it. Make sure you go in with your eyes open. But if you do it, wow, what a difference you might make for this kid!

Me and my case manager met with J today at the psych hospital. It was so awesome. He remembered me! I was waiting for my cm to show up in the vist room which has a door with a window. I guess the kids were getting ready to go to a new activity because I heard them outside in the larger area. Then I noticed faces peeking at me through the tiny window. Then I heard J say "She here for me yall. I know her." They were asking him who I was and he was like "Don't worry about all that". He had his hair spiked up in a little faux hawk that I saw more than I actually saw his face in the window because he's so little. Then he tried to hide by squatting down, not realizing his hair was still sticking up through the window saying "You can't see me". Mind you, this is an 11yo kid. It was sweet but a little sad at the same time...playing hide and seek. Anyway, he seemed excited but nervous/scared especially when I told him my son was almost 14. I think maybe he might be used to getting picked on by older kids. and then with the realization of the upcoming change, I did see him withdraw a bit. So I pick him up on Saturday for a day visit with the likelihood that he will be placed in my home, within the week. Apparently the state hates paying that residential per diem. The nurse said he's doing well. The meds are working. He seemed ok...a little fidgety. My cm said he's definitely a lot calmer than the last time he saw him and looks like he's gaining some weight. I'm happy and my son is really looking forward to it. We had Chinese food for dinner and he ran to me showing me his fortune that said something about new friends breaking him out of old routines.
