Homestudy Scheduled- What To Expect

We finally got the homestudy scheduled for our application to kinship foster our nephew. FINALLY.....we got a step further in this process. I think all the ruckus I raised in the last 7-10 day stirred the pot alittle.

I know that we only have 1 homestudy for kinship foster typically per our CW.

The CW called today and they are coming tomorrow. It's being pushed to move him before Christmas. I guess they told bio dad that they intend to move him in the next week or two to us.

Anyhow, the CW said we do not need to have the bedroom ready for this. We have a 3rd bedroom that will be my nephews room. Right now it's just a "catch-all" room. She said we'll just have to show we have a crib and other items when they transfer him. So, what will they be looking for? Just not sure what to expect.....also for traditional foster is it 1 homestudy or several? Just wondering if this has a different set of criteria.

Thanks

typically, they are looking for a safe home- no exposed wires or other hazards, generally clean, a clear path to all rooms, smoke detectors that work, knives, chemicals, and medicines in a locked cabinet. water temperature between 105-120 i believe. but if it is too hot when they test it, just agree to turn it down. you can test it with a meat thermometer...just run it under the hot water for several minutes in each room. other than that, i can't remember. sometimes states post foster care home regulations online, so try googling your state. congratulations and good luck!!!!!

Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, where you keep cleaning supplies and chemicals, where you keep knives, guns, and other weapons, where you keep medications, if your swimming pools are fenced off (if you have them), if you have the space for the child and their belongings, how hot your water heater is set to, etc. The purpose of the visit isn't to elimination you, just to identify any possible safety concerns and help you to fix them.

Also, technically the "home study" is the big process of getting to know your family, lifestyle, etc. Interviews, classes, results of physicals, etc etc is all part of the "home study". Most people think it's just the visit to your house but it is usually the bigger process.

ah...i forgot about the fire extinguisher. one in the kitchen for sure, sometimes a state wants you to have a second one upstairs if you have a 2 story house. i am pretty sure it has to be an abc extinguisher- puts out all kinds of fires. you can get one at target if you don't have one already.

Thank you. She told us she'd be w/ us for about 30 minutes. She wanted to do a quick walk through and then review the plan and case. She wanted to verify we have the babies furniture in place too she said. I do not think we have a fire extinguisher- though I'm not 100% sure.

Fingers crossed all goes well.
