home visit was a breeze
I can't believe how worked up in anticipation I got for it. I spent the whole weekend cleaning and deodorizing (I have a 13yo son and a dog and a cat). Went to the grocery store to make sure the kitchen was fully stocked. Bought a billion smoke detectors and outlet covers and even a first aid kit. We spent about an hour talking and then had a 2 minute walkthrough of the house. He looked at my fire extinguisher, flushed my toilet, ran my water, tested the 2 smoke deterctors I had installed. He said he doesn't forsee any problems given my demeanor and outlook and that he would be in touch soon. For some reason he mentioned a brother and sister as an example even though I only have 1 bed (was that a hint?). Now I can exhale.

Glad it went so well for you! I will try to take comfort from how smooth your home visit was. Mine isn't even scheduled yet and I'm stressing over it. I know I've been told not to and all, but seriously! How do you NOT?
Don't know about the hint and all, but I suppose anything's possible.... |

I am glad your homestudy went well. I said the same thing. Mine was a breeze too. And the sad thing is that she noticed nothing. All the cleaning, locks on cabinets, the tool boxes to lock up knives and medicine was in vain because she did not look for that stuff.

Hadn't even thought about the knives, thanks for that tip (even though you didn't have to use it). I too am freaked out about the dog taking a crap somewhere and not seeing it until the cw is walking around.
Our instructor (from class) said something about needing letters of reference amongst everything else... and that our homestudy would consist of two to four visits depending on what they felt was acceptable. Anyone else have to go through that? (more than one) I SO don't know... I constantly feel like I'm walking around in the land of confusion and probably will forever feel like this til we have placement and have made it through an adoption Anybody else feel that way?

Our first home visit went fine.
And you don't need to have everything "perfect" before the first visit. Our CW had a few good suggestions for child proofing the house - like putting a safety latch on the deep freeze ($2.49 at home depot). We took care of it before her next visit and all was fine. Just remember - the social workers have children and dogs houses too. They are not perfect parents or housekeepers. They put their pants on one leg at ta time just like we do. |

HA HA HA!!!!! Every time, and I mean EVERY TIME, I do a massive house cleaning because somebody who might pass judgement on the cleanliness of my home comes over, my cat pukes. She's puked on the bed, on the rugs, on the bench in the kitchen, on the stairs, on the sofa.... you name it. Come to think of it, I should go on the puke hunt now. My MIL is coming tomorrow......... |

My dog walked behind the chair where the woman doing the homestudy was sitting, and threw up! I decided it proved I could handle small things vomiting. We still passed that portion, even with that. Now we're waiting on the home inspection. |

Heh. Before my first homestudy, I actually cleaned the OVEN!! Needless to say, she didn't even look in there. Now she's lucky if I push this morning's cereal bowls over so she's got a place to sit. |

Oh BB, I am sooooo like you. After 6 years everyone at DHS knows that my house is going to be messy somewhere, but that my kids will be in clean diapers and have full tummies. I always tell them that my kids come first, the housework waits until they are asleep.
I have had babies oogey all over, and I do mean all over numerous cw. Even through it all I have never felt like I was being judged. Take two deep breathes and breathe.
