when can you get the call????

Hello, I am new to this forum and I had posted the other day that i had got my first call for a placement of a 4yr old boy and a 5 yr old girl but had to turn it down, that was on Wed. well now I have not gotten any other call, my question is can they call at anytime even on a Sat. and Sun. my husband and I don't want to leave our house because we are afraid that we are going to miss the call. Thanks so much for your help.

Ask your caseworker - it varies from state to state and even agency to agency. Here in Mass, you will only get a placement call during weekday business hours unless you are licensed as a hotline home.

Hotline is for emergency placements (when the children are removed from parents' custody after regular business hours) and are only in our home until the next business day. Then they move into a regular foster home.

In AL they can call any time. The foster parent who did part of our training classes said she'd had calls at 2am (when they'd just removed a child) for immediate placement!

DHR have our cell and work numbers as well as our home, so they can reach us anywhere.

Do you have a cell phone or can you get one that is "pay as you go"?

I'm also in PA, Philly. On my application, they asked if I was willing to take emergency/short term (less than 30 days) placements and I did say yes. So I expect that I will receive calls based on when they remove the children. I mean the kids have to go somewhere when they are removed. I know they have emergency shelters here but I think that's only for when they can't find an immediate placement. I think the idea of the pay as you go cell phone is a great idea especially if only the foster care agency has the number. That way you know who's calling immedately when it rings...kinda like the batphone...lol

Congrats on becoming a foster parent! I'm also in PA. During the licensing process, the county asked if we could be emergency foster parents and we agreed. This means the county can contact us anytime. All of our placement calls have been late at night. Once it is determined that the child will stay in the county's care, they ask if we are willing to keep the child as a "regular" foster home...of course we say yes! HTH!!
