In September, I updated DCFS that we'd added a third dog to the family and faxed them her health certificates. In October, I updated the placement worker that two of our pets had their annual updates and I had the renewed rabies vaccinations to fax them. They responded they had all they needed and would contact us again when our license was approved.
This week, we had to put our cat to sleep due to old age. She was 15 and her body was rapidly shutting down. This week, we'll either have to rehome the new dog or put her to sleep as well. She's suddenly developed a serious health condition which is beyond our ability to care for. DH doesn't want to put her to sleep because she's only 18 months old. Unfortunately, there's no hope for a cure. Anyway, should I bother to update them that our pet count just dropped in half?

I'm sorry about your pet losses.
Yeah, you can just send them a email after the thing with your current dog is figured out.

I usually only update information (pet changes, insurance changes, etc) at relicensure time. You may want to ask your worker how often they want updates.

If you think that the number of pets you have has ever been an issue, I would let them know that there aren't as many.

Thank you for the responses. I do not think the number of animals we had was an issue because we were within the county's legal limits.
I will update the them after the dog's situation is resolved on Wednesday. We received confirmation this weekend that she definitely has the condition and it is most likely caused by one or more tumors in her brain. They may or may not be cancerous. She may or may not be able to live a few more years. At the very least, she can never be an indoor dog again. We've been turned down by 4 rescue organizations. Her last hope for survival is with a gentleman who works with a local SPCA and has a farm. His setup could meet her needs and he works very closely with vets. He is planning to come get her Wednesday morning. If he backs out, we will have to put her to sleep. R is taking this all very well considering she was his dog. We've explained her situation and the limitations of our ability to care for her. He is aware that she's currently scheduled to be moved to a farm to live out her days and he thinks that's a cool option for her.
