Question Bankruptcy and Fostering...

I was wondering if you can still foster/adopt if you have filed for bankruptcy. Does anyone know? Edited to say: We haven't filed for bankruptcy, but with DH's business failing last winter, if we become responsible for more debt from the failed company, we may have to file. DH now has a stable, well paying job. If we do have to file, would we lose our license even though we would still be able to provide very well for our family and anyone we are fostering?

Hmmmm, don't know, but I would think that if you were to file for bankruptcy that would freeze all your accounts, including your foster care stipend. I know when my mother filed for bankruptcy numerous years ago they froze all of her accounts and we had to pay some of her bills since she wasn't able to access anything in her account.

I think as long as you could provide for your family you should be fine but I would check with your licensing worker. Be upfront and honest.

I think that once you are a foster parent everything is looked at on a case by case basis. I know when we had something happen in our life, had we not already been foster parents we wouldn't have been licensed, but since we were we had the opportunity to explain... and our agency supported us entirely.

I'd talk to your licensing worker, provided you have a good relationship with that person. If you don't, I'd hold off until you know for sure you have to file.

To get licensed here they never asked for a credit report or if we filed bankruptcy or anything like that. They just asked for our total income and then our liabilities minused from that to show how much we have left over each month. I really don't believe a bankruptcy would be an issue...but if you can't pay your bills each month then there would be an issue.

I broke down and called our office of licensing (annonymously ) and they said that a bankruptcy didn't matter as long as our income was above the poverty level. So, we are all good! Hopefully we won't have to file, but if we do, that's at least one less thing to worry about. Thanks everyone!
