Question Homestudy Question

When you have your homestudy for fost/adopt, can you just have a child latch (the one you push down on to open the cabinet) on a cabinet with dishwasher soap in it, or do you have to have it up out of reach or locked up instead? For our regular domestic adoption homestudy, it was fine to just have a child latch on it, but I'm getting the feeling that this homestudy may be a little different .

Those worked fine for our homestudy, but our licensor wasn't really as thorough as I've heard others can be. I would also assume that it can vary depending on what state you're in and who actually does your homestudy.

If you already have the latch type on, go ahead and keep it. If your local DHS office prefers a different type they will let you know at the time of the homestudy.

All medicines and "cleaners" were locked up but we, too, had dish detergent and extra hand soap pump bottles under our kitchen sink with child proof safety locks on them (since we had an 18mo old bio son at the time we had those everywhere already).

We figured if we were allowed hand soap and shampoo in the bathrooms then surely this would be ok. They said it was. Just cleaners like ammonia, lysol, aerosol cans, and other more dangerous item had to be locked in a seperate area with meds.

The child proof latches were ok for my homestudy as well. I found great kid proof kits for less than $7 at the local big box store. It had 24 plug covers, 4 door knob covers, and a bunch of latches!

My home study worker did not check any of my locks. She just wanted to see where the baby was going to sleep. Our licensing worker checked everything out.

We weren't required to have soaps/cleaners locked up - just out of reach of children who are to young to know not to take a big drink/eat it. A cabinet lock/child latch would have been fine...but I kept my stuff up high anyway, since I had limited space.

They never checked. The only tested water temp and measured the rooms.

Thanks everyone. We have our cleaners in cabinets in the laundry room (which we keep locked at all times) and our meds in a locked cabinet inside the locked laundry room. I'll put the child locks everywhere else there will be anything else like that. Thanks so much!!
