Depends on your state

It really depends on where you reside, as each state is different. I live in Iowa.

The first step we had was to go to an informational meeting. At that meeting, we were told basics and about the process. We decided to proceed. The next step was filling out some paperwork and having it submitted to the state to check for criminal histories and child abuse. Now, the next step is MAPP classes which begin in February for us.

Check out this link:

That should get you started. This forum is wonderful and very supportive if you have any other questions.

Becoming a foster parent

I noticed that you said you started your homestudy and paperwork prior to taking the classes. In my county they told me the first step are the classes (maybe because so many drop out after the classes) I really want an infant however they told me they get very few infants in our county. I asked if I could register in the next county over and they told me not anymore. You must stay in your county. I have seen some posting where people have waited over a year for their first placement. I wonder does it usually take that long? I am willing to take 0-2 and am willing to take both just foster and foster to adopt. I didnt realize you could start the homestudy prior to completing the classes?

I am sorry I guess I stated ot wrong. Our classes are only 3 weeks long (8 hours a day)and they start home study's by the last class. We live in Duval County, Florida and they are in desperate need of homes for babies. Now not alot of babies go in to the adoption system most foster parents adopt the infants in their care. They had a hard time finding a home to take a 3 month old because there just arent alot of people who want babies( unless they are looking to adopt and even then they do not want to risk having to give the baby back.)
We have been told for the age group we want it should not take but 3-4 months if that.We are preparing ourself for about 5-6 months before a child but I want to get evrything ready just in case!

I posted a private message to you because we live in the next county over. Clay county and I was curious to compare the differences and similarities.
