adoption through fostering

Hi, we have only been licensed since 10/1 and are in Alabama. The way I understand it is that the legislation that was past this past May states that if the child becomes adoptable then the foster parents have the first opportunity to adopt and the cost is little if any. I dont know if the legislation affects all states or just Alabama but its called the Foster Parents Bill of Rights. Ill try to look it up and post again later with that information.

I will try to look that information up also. That would be very interested in finding out myself since my husband and I are in the process of becoming foster/adopt parents.

Please let me know if you find anything out.

Hi,

You're right as long as no relative can be found you will be given the first opportunity to adopt a child you've been parenting. You need to remember that if a relative is located and wants to adopt the child and can pass the homestudy (which is less rigid then what you will go through to become a foster parent) then that family member will be able to adopt him/her.

Best of luck.

Michelle
