Canadian foster parent
Hi everyone,
I am Canadian and unfortunatley I have not been able to find any Canadian websites like this. I am in the process of becoming a foster parent. I just thought it would be interesting to compare the process I go through and the experiences to see all of the differences. The first thing that I have noticed is we do not have to complete any sort of training before being approved. Once we are approved then we have 2 years to complete classroom training. It also seems as if we do get more money. Where I live it starts at $1200 a month per child. I am really looking forward to being a foster parent and I can't wait to get my first child. I am young being only 23 so I don't really think having teenagers would be appropriate. I was considering any age from infant to 13. I just wonder if I will have to wait as long as some of you have had to. I hope not. I look forward to sharing my experiences. Our first meeting is tomorrow night. ![]() |

Hi
Hi,
Congatulations on your decision to become a foster parent! I have 2 biological sons (20 and 16) and 4 foster children (we're in the process of adopting our 2 and 3 year olds! woohoo. I can tell you that besides raising my sons being a foster parent has been the most rewarding thing I have ever done! I live in KY and we get about half that amount per month. We have to attend 30 hours of training, 1 night a week for 3 hours for 10 weeks, go through major background checks, fill out huge amounts of paperwork on your family, have physicals, etc. Being so young I'd really be worried about taking in a 13 year old. You may want to reconsider...seems to me that birth to 9, maybe even 10 would be better, but you know yourself and what you can handle. Best of luck to you. Please post again and keep us updated.

Hi,
I went to my info meeting the other night. I was wrong in some of the things I had thought. We do have to complete 21 hours of training prior to receving foster children. Once we are foster parents then we have 2 years in which to complete more training. Also we get between $700 and $800 a month per child depending on the age. Once you have experience you can move up to become a level 1, 2 and 3 foster parent and you do receive extra money. The biggest difference is that once you are approved then you will most likely get a call for a child the next day or sometimes even the same day that is how much of a shortage there is. I am super excited. I mailed out the first part of my application today so I should hear something within the next 2 weeks. |
