Question considering foster care.. but where to start?

Hi
I have been considering foster care, and have done tons of research; however, I'm only 18, and I want to get prepared for foster care. Where do I start? Most would say "college!" and I understand that.. but I don't feel college is right for me (I haven't ruled it out, but I'm not sure either way). I feel like I can't do a thing until I'm 21.. I've thought about volunteering somewhere, like Big Brothers and Big Sisters, so I can have some experience with "troubled" kids (not sure of 'correct term'). I am self employed right now, but I want to get a steady job, at a nearby grocery store.
I don't know what to do as far as housing goes. Right now, I am living with my uncle, and paying rent to help him out so he doesn't incurr debt from my stay. How many foster children does the "average" foster parent have?
I have many questions, but I suppose this is enough for now I am just so excited about the possibility of foster care!
Thank you for any advice/information!

Cool Heya

Yep, researching the field is your best thing right now. These boards here, others abroad and talking with your local children's division will help. Sounds like you have some "goal setting" and setting up to do with things before you could be involved though. Neat that your thinking about this at your age.

Kids? Up to you really.. You make the decision what you are willing to take in and the amount (max) is determined on the amount of space you have in the home, vehicle/transportation to get them places and of course the "age" allowance. Here it's no more than 2 under 2 and you can't have boys and girls mixed in rooms over the age of 5-6, an infant can have a crib in "your" room until 2, etc etc etc.. but, you'll learn as you go on with your research and then eventual classes if you still want to do it.

Yes, mentor programs and big sister would be a fabulous tool and blessing to begin with Good luck with all this.

Thanks MoFosterMom

So, as for the training courses.. do I start them when I turn 21 or can I have them finished by the time I'm 21?
Also, what is "foster-to-adopt" and how does it work??

Thanks again
