My husband and I are thinking about becoming foster parents, and we have a few questions. First, we were wondering how long the classes are. Because of his job, he isn't home most weekdays right now. Do they have classes on the weekends? And how long does each class last? We were hoping the classes would last a while instead of being stretched out over a long period of time. Does anyone have any advice?

Different states run the classes differently. And sometimes, if you sign up with a private agency that contracts with the state to do foster care, the class schedule can be even more different.
The only way to know for sure is to start the process. Call your local Department of Family Services (or whatever they call it in your area) and attend an orientation meeting. They'll fill you in on required classes, homestudies, other requirements, etc that apply in your area. Good luck! |

Classes also seem to vary from agency to agency. I always advise people to call as many agencies as possible and attend as many orientations as you can. Compare what (they say) they offer in terms of support, services, compensation, etc. Then choose who to go with by which agency has the most things that are important to you. Keep in mind that they are recruiting you, though, so what they "sell" you may not be what you "receive".
Most of my training sessions were available for full-day sessions on Saturdays, so it didn't take up that much time. And, they do offer some evening sessions as well.
