thinking about being foster parents in GA
Hi, we are praying about becoming foster parents in Georgia. We have just started our research as to not just jump right into something we aren't prepared for. Is anyone here from GA? Is it difficult? I have so many questions, if someone could help. I guess I just don't know what to expect or where to begin.

We are from Georgia and just have finished our Mapp classes. We have thought about being foster parents for a long time and have always had other peoples children in our home.We were told we may have children in our home next week and for sure by Christmas.I too think you should really be sure of it but I think if you go ahead and take the classes it will help you make up your mind. There is no pressure to commit to it and they give you time to see if it is for you.We are so excited about it now more than ever. We will pray for you to make the right decision. Please pray for us too.

Hi MistyDave! We are not in Georgia, we are here in Florida. We are 3 short classes from finishing our MAPPS training. But I know if you are interested in Fostering get all the information you can. The internet is a wonderful source. And request information from your states agency. Then attend a orintation class. They can answer alot of your questions and help you decide if this is for you. Good Luck! Le us know what you decide.

How long are the mapp classes in GA? And what kind of scrutiny do you have to go through to become a foster parent? Thanks for the replies.

We are licensed therapeutic foster parents in Georgia. The MAPP classes typically take 10 weeks, although some agencies compress them into a shorter time frame. You will have to be fingerprinted and FBI background checked. You will have to have a current physical, including tests for TB and STDs. Your home will have to be safety checked, and if you have a well and/or septic system, the Health Dept. will check them out. If you have pets, you have to provide proof of rabies innoculations. You will be interviewed at least once. If you go to the website for DHR, it will go into greater detail about all the requirements. It can be a long road since the fingerprints can take a long time (ours took over 4 months), so I would suggest to go ahead and get started as soon as you make your decision. Good luck to you.

We are also in GA and if you decide foster parenting is the right thing for your family I can tell you that is no more rewarding thing you can do. Although I am not saying it is always easy
If you have any specific questions I will be glad to answer as best I can. I know where we are they need foster parents badly and I don't think people wait anytime here after they are licensed for a placement. Good luck and keep us posted.
