hey my mom wants to become a foster parent. i told her i would help her find stuff on the internet because shes computer illeterate anyways just wondering where to start... we live in virginia, like 10 minutes away from DC and my mom says theres a big need for foster parents in the district... i was wondering if you guys could tell me how to start in virginia. and also if you knew even though we dont live in DC are we allowed to have foster kids from DC since we live so close? thanks alot!

I cannot answer most of your questions but I would have your mom start by calling your local Department of Children and Families and tell them she is interested in becoming a foster parent.

Also tell her to check out private agencies in the area. Then, if they have orientation classes, attend as many as possible to compare agencies & figure out which one she feels most comfortable with. I've found that different agencies offer different support & have different policies (I didn't find this out until AFTER I'd chosen my agency).
