What do I expect?

This message was originally posted by froggy82.

My husband and I are getting ready to take the 30 hour class to become foster parents. We will begin in the fall. What all do they cover in these classes? What all should I make sure is done at my house for the first visit? I know that our smoke dectectors must be in working order. Do we need to childproof anything yet? I am anxious, nervous, excited, I need to know everything you know to help us decide what to do. -- We are a young couple (I am 21- DH is 25). I work part time and go to school - I am home by 5 - 5:30 - no night classes. What advice can you all give me?

Wow! I know how excited you are! You will have plenty of time for chil proofing once your classes start, however in Ohio you will both need physicals and a fire inspectionand extinguisher. It takes time for Dr. appointments sometimes you may want to schedule those. Your local fire dept. does the fire check. Good Luck to you guys, it's so fun and rewarding!!! Robin

I am sure it depends on what state and agency you are with.
On the first visit we had they did the interview and initial walk through. They just made a list of things that would need to be done to the house prior to the final walk through. They checked water temp., smoke detectors, gave suggestions on how to organize so that only a few doors would have to be locked.
It was actually really quick and easy, not at all what I expected. Here they just do the fire part as part of the overall check I guess as there was never anything said about it.
It is very exciting!! Have fun and good luck!!
Jodi
