Question About Foster Training

This message was originally posted by NickiMc.

Okay, I'm the new kid on the block and I (of course) have a question.

First, in a nutshell, I am a 35 y/o single working woman and have decided to take the first steps to becoming a foster parent with the eventual goal of adopting an older child.

I currently live in a one bedroom house and know that I must move to at least a two bedroom in order to foster. Needless to say, has anyone noticed the rents in the L.A. area lately? Yikes! I am currently on a budget and expect to be moving to a bigger house in about 6 months.

Here's my question: Can I start the foster classes now? I know they take about 6 months, and I know that the actual home study must be done in the home the child will live in, but can I start the classes now and complete the home study once I am in my new place?

Any info would be appreciated. And I would especially like to hear from single working moms. Thanks!

I think that you should ask your licensing social worker in your area. I'm just guessing when I think that ours would meet and discuss your plans but suggest that you wait until you are ready. A private agency might be more flexible.

In NH, there are 8 classes in the prelicensing requirements. They usually run them two per week so it's over in 4 weeks. They only offer them once or twice per year.

Thanks for the reply, Mike. I have spoken briefly to a private foster-adopt agency in my area and got some basic info. It seems they offer 1 different class a month, so I thought I might be able to get a jump start since it seems it will take some time to get all the classes under my belt. Anyone else have any experience with this?
