Considering Becoming a Foster Parent

This message was originally posted by MAragon.

I am currently considering becoming a foster parent. But I have a few questions. I am currently engaged to be married (date unknown) and my fiance and I currently have legal guardianship of his 2 younger sisters ages 12 and 13. We just got legal guardianship of them October 2001. They have lived with us since August 1999. Prior to the legal guardianship they were in our custody as foster family, so there were less restrictions to get the 2 of them--basically a back ground and home check that took less than a month and a half because they were already placed in a foster home through a private agency. My question is, does it matter that my fiance and I are not married yet? It didn't matter when we were trying to get custody of his sisters, however, he is the sole guardian, but I was included in the back ground check. If anyone has any info, please let me know.
Thanks!

That depends on the agency. It hasn't mattered to us, and I believe the majority of agencies are more worried about the stability of your relationship than any legal formalities. I suspect we would have had more trouble if we'd gone through Catholic Social Services, for example, though.
If you're living together you will both have to take the training together, and both be licensed.
Good luck!
