thinking of foster care

This message was originally posted by rcurtisjr.

me and my wife have been thinking of foster care for quite a while...in fact we've gone through all the training and selection process, but just a short while ago, the agency we were working with went out of business. we are discouraged that we have to start all over with a new agency and was wondering how does someone select a good agency?? according to our state laws we can only have 1 child since we already have 5 of our own, but we would like to make a good home for some child. and we don't want to give up the dream of it either, but discouragement has set in about starting over. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks
richard

You'll probably have to go through the training again. Even when switching from active agencies, they usually make you do it again - their way.

Word of mouth is the best way to judge an agency. If the foster parents are, for the most part, happy with a given agency, chances are much greater you will be too. You might try asking for references- it may slow the process down, having to wait for the agency to get back to you, but would be a good way to get opinions. You could also ask about and attend info nights given by the various agencies. Also, ask when calling around if anyone will let that previous training carry over. Maybe you'll get lucky.

Good luck,

- Star
