When to prepare the nursery
Hi Everyone,
I've just been informed that I should expect a referral of a boy we're planning to adopt from Guatemala. It will most likely not be until next Spring before the adoption will be final and we'll be able to take the baby home. How soon before the baby's arrival should we be setting up the nursery? What about baby showers - do most people have them before or after the baby comes home? I'm new to this and would appreciate any advice. Michele |

hi
my daughter is adopting soon..and she is being given a baby shower after the baby's arrival home. She is concerned that the appropriate inscription for adoption would not be on the cake, since she wants to be open with the child and let him know that he is adopted. Does anyone have any ideas? I thought of 'special delivery' but she did not like that idea. |

As soon as my daughter found out the nursery was set up. That was 11/17.
We are still waiting on our grandson, but, that shouldn't be long. We, the family, as a unit wanted to show our acceptance and love, so we planned the baby shower for approximately 3 weeks later. No one can be completely prepared with all the things that may be needed for the baby, the shower helps and shows the support of the family. My daughter was asked to make a baby shower registry, at one of the stores. Much happiness with your new child. |

I recently got the call - we are doing our home study and training for older child adoption this September. This means that i could be a mom by December. Same time my sister is Due to have her first baby.
I don't if that is why she recently discouraged me from registering for stuff i MIGHT NEED until AFTER the placement. I was stunned. When does she think i will have time. I asked my Sister in Law - she said the same thing. Then I asked my best friend. She felt the same way. wait until closer to placement. I said forget it and I am going tomorrow to register at Sears for the things I may want or need, with my Mom, who up until now has been giving me the most grief about adopting an older child.

I don't know when I will be a mom, I have already bought a few things (a couple newborn outfits) made a couple baby blankets, and purchased a couple of toys.
My mom and dad did the same for me - even a year before. They knew I was coming, but didn't know when. They just had a gut feeling that I would be a girl, so they only bought girl things. I see no harm in this at all. Get things ready. You know that baby is coming! |

I just feel weird buying things until I know for sure that it is a done deal. Maybe it is self- preservation or something...

I usually held off on buying gender specific or child specific things. (I also didn't want to 'jinx' anything.
Plus, I didn't want to get something that wouldn't fit or was the wrong color, etc.) I did get generic child stuff; games on clearance, sheets, etc. Friends held showers for the arrrival of each of my kids so we were given a good start once our kids came home. We usually aquired items slowly...something that was really, really, really difficult for me to make myself do! I wanted to run out and get whole wardrobes and enough toys to outfit small town the second we had confirmation that our family was chosen. ![]()
