I recently had a debate with a friend on the difference between calling a child "Jr." and calling them "the second."

My understanding was that if a son has the same name as his father, he is a junior not a second. However, if a child has the same name as another male relative such as the same name as a grandfather or uncle...he would be the second.

She says that "Jr." and "II" are interchangable and only used with father --> son naming.

This came about when I mentioned possibly naming an adoptive child the same name as my great grandfather (I'm single so the last name would be the same). I told her that he would be "the second" but she says that it would just be the name with no suffix.

Any thoughts?

My son is named after his dad and he is a "ll", I personally did that because I have heard so many "JR" boys nicknamed "JR" or J.R. and I didnt want that. No one has ever nicknamed him or called him "hey second" As for fathers versus grandfathers and uncles, I have never heard of that.

My husband is a second. His mother didn't like the sound of Junior. LOL. However there is a long line of the name in the family.

Example.

DH is Thomas Joseph II
FIL is Thomas Joseph
GF is Thomas Wesley
Uncle is Thomas Wesley Jr.

then for other children wesley and joseph if they are males are in the name somewhere.

Michael Joseph
Michael joseph jr
nathanial wesly
Michael Joel (combination of joseph and lynn)



then for the girls there is a
vikki lynn her sons being joshua jacob, michael joseph, noah Alynn

Jennifer marie with no children yet.

so my point being some where using other family names in the mix are always there.

I believe you are correct, and your son would be II.

I would consider just naming him after with no suffix, though, since the age difference and difference in housholds (I assume) will probably lead to no major confusion. My husband is a IV and my agency is a bit concerned this might cause some paperwork problems on the Guatemala-side. (let's hope not!).

By the way, my husband and his father work at the same company (though in different states) and my husband gets called 4.0 alot (he works with computer systems). So it is not just juniors that get nicknamed.

Traditionally numberals or Jr. are ONLY used for children name after their fathers. If a child is named after a grandfather or uncle is not normally given the II or Jr. suffix.
the suffix came from generational living in olden days. When you have 3 or 4 John Smiths living in the same household you have to have a way to call them seperately lol

That is also where we get the names ending in "Son" they literally mean "Son of" which is one of my pet peeves with naming little girls Allyson or Maddison or Grayson etc lol Did you have to do a report on what your name meant?? lol I never felt more sorry a child then for the little girls who had to follow Sarah "The Princess" with "Son of Gray" or "Son of Maddon"
