what's in vogue for names

Hi,

I have a dear friend who is a nurse who works with newborn babies. She says that Irish names are all the rage these days ... do you think that's true?

It's funny that we want to find names that are unique for our children and when we do, it seems others pick up on it and use the same names.

What names are in vogue these days?

I have to say that I have noticed the popularity of Irish names. I NEVER knew anyone named Shannon, now I know a ton.

I named my son Quinn. At his birthday party, there was a girl there named Quinn. I watched Trading Spaces and they have had 2 episodes with children named Quinn, a boy and a girl. The principal at school has just become an aunt to a Quinn and my sister's sister-in-law just became an aunt to a Quinn. So, I guess it isn't as unique as I thought. I know Quintan has become popular, but I thought I was safe with Quinn.

I'm Irish, so the Irish surnames call to me - Bailey, Murphy, Griffin, and of course Quinn!

I've actually seen a trend in surnames becoming first names as I noted above and also I know a Reed, Madison, Riley.

for Q's mom

Hi,

Thanks for your post. I love those names! I've never been to Ireland, but I'd love to go and meet all those lovely Irish people!

Hi,

I have noticed that many people are using last names for first names. I have seen quite a few of the following as first names:

McKenna
Macinzie
Kennedy
Shay (as in Shay Stadium, but I may be spelling it wrong)
Walker
Wallton

I have also seem a lot of combination names, like a combo of the parents first and last names, like Jack and Nell become Janell.

It makes some pretty interesting names!

Hi,

It does make for some pretty interesting names ... it's fun to be creative when naming children ... sometimes we love the names but the kids don't!

When my son Zachary was born I had chosen the name Shakira as a girl's name ... when he grew up and I told him what his name would have been if he were a girl, he said 'I'm happy I was born a boy!'

When my cousin was expecting, the girls name she liked was Shavaughn - Shannon and Vaughn. Her son Jordan feels the same way as your Zachary - glad he's a boy.

By the way, Zachary is another one of those names that has become wildly popular. Not one in my school when I went, now, tons of them. We have a 7 year old Zachary.

If anyone has any suggestions, my B&SIL are expecting their first, a girl, in June.

They've decided on the first name of "Peyton" but are having a hard time with the middle name.

Any suggestions would be great!!

And how many people will say "place"? I'm not personally old enough to remember Peyton Place, but I have heard of it.

Seriously, that is a toughy. We're all Ann's and Marie's for middle names in our family. My friend's name is Cheryl Rae . . . Peyton Rae isn't too bad.

I have been noticing that the "older" names are comming back. Some are:
Emma
Ruth
Emily
we have a 3 month old daugher through the miracle of adoption and her name is Claire Adeline.
I think the old names are great.
cc
My sister has a son and his name is Keegan, that is Irish for "firey one".

I've wanted to use Parker because it was my FILs name. I think alot of older names sound new these days. I know around our neck of the woods, older names have been wildly popular for years.

Esther
Pearl
Ruth
Ruby (Sister are Jade and Emerald)

Back to the Irish thing, my girlfriend has
Shannon
Mollly
James Patrick
Patricia (Patty)

Here is a list of Irish names:

Irish Name Finder

There are some pretty cool names on there! Thanks for bringing it up!
