Blue Cross of Michigan---grrr

Well, BCBS announced yesterday that they will now start to cover treatment for autism. My first response was "Yeah, about time". Then I find out the details...including one huge one:
-coverage is limited to 2-5 year olds
-only families who are insured under their companies' group policies that offer MENTAL health coverage. They will be marketing this to self-insured employers.

The quote that killed me was by a BCBS corporate affairs director: "Even though we are offering the coverage now, we still consider the treatment to be experimental and investigational." Wow, gotta love these guys.

I am so sorry Kathy! I have nothing good to say about BCBS as it is, but that just totally stinks!

Well, I actually agree with him. Most forms of "treatment" for autism ARE experimental and investigational. No form of treatment is "commonly accepted" and proven "necessary" for the treatment of autism....which is why its difficult for parents and caregivers to choose between all the competing alternatives.

Intensive behavior therapy is no longer considered experimental as of a few weeks ago.

As for all the other things people try.....
