What a Great Way to Learn About an Adopted Child's Culture!
Hi Everyone:
Have you ever thought about the importance of understanding our roots? Have you ever lived in a country where most people do not look too much like you except for a few? If we have not personally can we really know what it is like? People and children are individuals therefore the emotions that go along with being different than others vary. I have heard that kids look for role models in society. Many times they will try to find a role model that is the same race as they are. To me this is a way of connecting with a person's own cultural background. Each person's need to do this may vary a bit. As parents I often think about sharing with our children different positive experiences so that they may make some choices that will aid in their development. As part of that I think of children being raised in a family that is of a different race and the value of learning about people that are from their own race. Viewing a video could be an easy way to help a child connect with their culture. Perhaps all children would not be interested but if it is a plus here are some examples of videos for the Chinese culture: http://www.adoptionshop.com/cgi-bin/...tion/to=x.html Best to each of you as you parent these awesome children!
