Calling anyone from AZ

Hi Meme13,

I'm in Glendale and after a lot of wrong information, wrong phone numbers, wrong schedules, etc., I decided to go with the agency "Arise" in east Mesa. Tina Hammerton is the training coordinator and she's wonderful! I started the process in June 2003 and had my first two kids on Christmas Eve! Anyway, if you want to know anything else, just ask.

Love,

Chellers

Have you all heard about the Arizona Association for Foster and Adoptive Parents or the Family Connections Center? Both are newly started and offer support, training resources and connections to foster and adoptive families in Ariziona. I am the Program Committee Chairperson for AZAFAP and the Center Coordinator for FCC and would love to share more info with anyone who is interested.

Save the date...
May is National Foster Care Month. AZAFAP in partnership with local agencies is planning a Blue Ribbon Campaign to tie 8000 blue ribbons (1 for each child in care) around trees at the State Capitol. We are looking for volunteers and supports.

meme13,
I don't know much about ARISE, but have heard that it is a fine agency. What you need to do first is call 1-877-KIDS-NEEDU. They will set you up to take an orientation class anywhere in the State. Classes are held 5 times per month. In the meantime, I would research several agencies and find one that meets your needs. Each agency has different belief systems, training schedules, post placement resources, etc and you need to get with an agency that can support your needs and beliefs! Let me know if you need more help.

How to get started

Lynn,
You will need to choose an agency (see above post) and start classes. Classes, inspection, home visits, etc., will take approximately six months (the home inspection is what takes the longest). After that you will be licensed and they will start calling you immediately to take kids because of the shortage of homes!

Fees

My understanding is that AASK charges for some of their services. I don't know how much. We went with ARISE, and there weren't any fees. When you get kids, remember that you can get additional funds for summer camp, vacations, clothing, and that childcare is also paid for. You will not receive your first monthly check, though, for almost two months, and you won't get any money in advance. If you decide to adopt, you will need to complete subsidy paperwork so that you can continue to get monthly checks to help care for your child/ren. You will also get money to pay for the legal fees for the adoption, and your child/ren will continue to have medical/dental coverage. Good luck!

late on thread!

Well, I guess I'm late in replying to this post, but better late than never

We are seeking adoption of a child, possibly siblings, through AASK. We had a rocky start with them, but now things seem to be going smoothly. So far we are happy with our new case worker and she returns calls fairly quickly. Going into week 3 of the PRIDE classes!

Thumbs up Yuma anyone?

I'm in Yuma! Anyone else out there? I finished PRIDE, but got stuck with big time fear and stopped the home study last week until I can get my physical done in June. I just got so anxious and fearful that I knew I needed a break. I'll be adopting / fostering as a single mom and I will be 45 this summer. I was a child welfare worker in another state, I have two foster sister's from when I was a young adult, and I had five step children when I was married. But I have never been a Mom myself by myself. I'm afraid I won't be able to do it right. So, any support would be helpful!
