Native Adoptees

Hello,

I wanted to see if you could possibly help my husband. Here is his story...

His parents were not married to eachother, but his mother was married to another man at the time, so she has/had his last name, and so did my husband (on his birth certificate and adoption order). We do have the names of both his parents as the paperwork from the adoption agency was not properly "whited out". Instead they took a blue ballpoint pen and crossed out the names which were typed in black ink. Anyway, we know their names.

Both of his birthparents listed themselves as Metis, which I've come to find out could mean anything. I have a feeling that they were very embarassed about the situation, and therefore didn't give any real identifying information about themselves, tribe or band.

Do you think you may be able to help us?

Sincerely, Christy

You are right Metis can mean he came from various firstnations bands.
Have you tried a phone look up on the parents?
Is it aboriginal heritage you are looking for?

Talking Native Adoptees

Hi Melissa,

Thanks for your quick reply!!!

I'm not really sure if he is Metis or not. I think that his parents were ashamed of the affair they had, and they didn't want anyone to know what tribe or band that they were really from...does that make sense? I feel like I'm rambling sometimes.

I will check out the website you sent me...thanks bunches!

I've done phone searches for both of them, and found only one match for his BF's name, but it wasn't him. His mother was married to another man at the time of the affair, and I'm not sure if their marriage survived the affair or not. Her married last name at the time was Turner, which is fairly common, and I don't know what her husband's first name was.

Thanks again for your help.

Christy

Native Adoptees

In the process of moving a few times since we've been married, I have no idea where all the adoption paperwork is anymore. I've found a few places where I can request them again, but they are so back-logged I'm told it can take up to a year to get them back, then even more waiting for the registry forms to get processed. The fact that we live in the States doesn't help much either as we have to do everything by mail.

My husband gets easily discouraged, so I end up doing most of the work, which I don't mind...I just wish it were a bit easier!

Is your brother's father Metis also? How are you doing with your searching?
