Welcome to the Search and Reunion Message Board!
NOTE: Alabama adoptees can now receive a copy of their original birth certificate with the names of the birth parents! See information below: Obtaining an Original Birth Certificate: An adult age 19 or older who was adopted in Alabama and has a sealed original birth certificate on file at the Center for Health Statistics may obtain a non-certified copy of that certificate as well as the other documents maintained with the original record. Contact: The State Department of Human Resources or the licensed child placing agency. Alabama Department of Human Resources Family Services Division, Office of Adoption 50 North Ripley Street Montgomery, AL 36130-4000 (334) 242-1374 Fax: (334) 242-0939 Obtaining Non-Identifying Information: Non-identifying information is available to birth parents, adopted adults age 19 or older, and adoptive parents. Obtaining Identifying Information: If either birth parent has given consent under oath to disclose identifying information, then an adopted adult age 19 or older can receive identifying information along with a copy of the original birth certificate relating to the consenting birth parent. If no consent is on file, an adopted adult age 19 or older may petition the court to release identifying information. The court will then hire a confidential intermediary to contact the birth parents for consent. If the birth parents are deceased, cannot be found, or do not consent, the court will decide whether to release identifying information. The court may decide to grant consent to the petition to release identifying information but include a provision to restrict or prohibit contact between the parties. Dear searchguru,
Alabama adoptee's who were born in Alabama can get their orig. cert. of birth. but Alabama adoptee's born in another state have to go to the state of birth. this is what I was told, I really get frustrated and they are tired of me contacting them but, oh well. they just have to put up with me until I find some truth. Ga. the last attempt I made with them does not allow OBC's to be given out. I did read something about amended birth cert.'s. though and wondered if you can tell me how one knows or what one can do about that. ie: my copy of my bc. is registered with dept. of public health of Ga. dated a year and 3 months after my birth date. the adoption was not finalized until 1 year and 1 month after birth date. does this mean that some social service was involved or do they do this type of follow-up on placement with private adoptions also. the final decree is for Russell county Alabama. how can I get those court records or do I have to hire an atty. to do this. Thank You, Your entries are of extreme value to all of us who are beginning or have been searching for any lenght of time. You truly are a God-send. Jul64inatl |

Response from the Search Guru, Moderator for the Search and Reunion Message Board
Welcome to the Search and Reunion Message Board!
When two different states are involved it always makes the search more difficult. Regarding the date on your Georgia birth certificate. An amended birth certificate generally is not issued until the adoption has been finalized...usually a year after the birth of the adoptee. To petition the court in Alabama: Contact the courthouse where your adoption was finalized and request their petition form. Fill it out, attach a copy of your driver's license and amended birth certificate and have your signature notarized. The Judge will then decide if he will open your file or not. It helps to write a cover letter explaining your "need to know". It also helps to have a letter from your Dr. explaining that you need your biological relatives medical history from the time of your birth until now and that you must search for your relatives and find them in order to get this information. If this is not successful you might then consider hiring an attorney.
