Both - Any and all
It's hard to find AA families who have or are adopting to share thier experience.

Well, I'm AA and so is DH... we're seeking to adopt an AA (or BR) newborn. We're currently in the process of doing our homestudy and deciding on which adoption agency to use for the actual matching/placement.

What are some of the deciding factors for you on picking an agency?

For us, the factors include (but are not limited to) reputation, stability, commitment to placing AA/BR children, services for birthmothers, services for adoptive parents, "full-service", overall comfort level, perceived integrity and, not the least, fees.
What about other people - what are the factors that impacted or are impacting your decision on an agency? |

Hi, everyone!! My name is Julie, and I'm the moderator for this forum. Welcome, welcome, welcome. I'm an African American adoptive mom with 2 sons (5 and almost 3), and I also work with Pact, an Adoption Alliance. We started this forum to talk about the following questions: Where do we find support in our community and extended families for our journey through adoption - from thinking about whether to adopt to welcoming a baby or child into our home? How and when do we talk about adoption with our kids, our families, our community? How do we make an adoption within an extended family work? What are the differences between private adoptions and foster care adoptions, and how do we make each of them work for our families? How can we, as African American adoptive parents, support other adoptive families in our community? SO, the forum is for pre-adopt and post-adopt parents, and the idea is to do what we can to give each other info and support.
cdawson asked about factors people considered when choosing an agency. Marfrey's answer was great -- I'd add asking how many AA adoptive parents the organization has worked with in the past. Just a few, or do they regularly reach out to and work with African American adoptive parents? |

We are AA and trying to adopt a newborn. We have an agency and an attorney and they both believe we should have a baby in no time. We are advertising through the newspaper and on adoption.com/parentprofiles and we appear to be the only AA's on their site. We were a little surprised by that. So there are some of us out here... just not too many.

This is a good thread. I look forward to hear from you all. I am AA and my husband is Caucasian. I have seen even less couples like us then I have AA couples. I don't know if that will/should be a source of concern for us. We are also looking to adopt a AA/bi-racial/multi-racial newborn. We have just started our journey and I am trying to do as much research as I can. Thank you all for allowing me to be apart of your journey as well.
Your sister in Christ

Hi My Poohbear,
Dh and I went to an orientation at the agency we plan to use and there were only THREE AA's in the entire room of abut 50-60 people. We were the only AA couple there, the other AA person was part of a bi-racial couple. It's been our experience that AA couples seeking to adopt are a rarity. There are more bi-racial couples but still not what I'd consider to be A LOT. My experience from what I have been involved in or witnessed first hand is that the process of adopting newborns is very non-ethnic. I would love to see that change but am not holding my breath. There are so many reasons - more than we can discuss here :-) |

WOW
what and awesome God we serve. His timing is always perfect. Kelli what agency did you use? We are still trying to find the best agency for us, at a reasonable price of course. I'm definitely willing to go out of state. I think at this point were all willing to do what ever we have to, within the law of course, to obtain our dream. What about the birthmom rights, how soon are they terminated in Georgia?
