He Doesn't Look Like You
Hello Everyone,
It's been awhile since I've visited. Things have been so busy with my already walking at 9 mos baby boy! I've been struggling lately with who to tell that my son was adopted. Today at a baby shower a cousin of mine asked to see pictures of him, and this woman commented "he doesn't look like you." very loudly to the crowd. I simply stated "he looks like himself." not feeling the need to share my family building history with some random stranger whose name I don't even remember 12 hours later. Whenever I tell people I have a 9 month old they always say...'you just had a baby.' I don't know if this is just a general assumption or a comment on my weight. Generally, I just say "he came home in October." Again not wanting to share my entire family building history with random people. How have you all dealt with these awkward moments in the conversation?

I have gotten "awkward" questions such as, "Where did your little boy get those beautiful eyes?" If I am close with a person I explain about my son's adoption. I am always looking to educate people about adoption, because I know there is a lot of misinformation out there. With strangers, I have learned to take things in stride and answer questions simply such as "He does have pretty eyes, doesn't he?" Usually people insist our son looks just like me even when they know he was adopted!

I get a lot of comments when I tell people I was on maternity leave, but only out for 4 weeks.... Both DDs are mixed race, so I usually end up telling them they were adopted when I whip out the pictures I am always showing people (whether or not they ask to see them!)... I know that it is their story to tell, but I find that if I tell people in a cheery voice, they accept it in a cheery way. If I choose to whisper, after looking around, then they also think it is a secret and sinister in some way. KWIM?
