I'm an adoptive mom to two african amer girls and neither had the problem that my new 9 month old has. Her scalp is patchy with dry skin. It's very noticable. Is there something special I should be doing? Her hair is in good condition and is still very soft baby hair. I'm wondering if I'm not conditioning her scalp enough-or if I'm over conditioning- or not using the right product on her hair..etc

What you describe might be what happened to me with our baby boy several months ago. (He's now just over one year.)
We already had had experience with two girl babies (just like you), but while waiting at the MD's office one afternoon, I was MORTIFIED to find patchy spots in his hair that I somehow had missed!!!!!

At any rate, I was told that this was, indeed cradle cap...which didn't look like cradle cap I'd seen in photos (just never experienced, that's for sure).
On advice, I used a soft bristled brush to 'get out' as much as I could, and started using a different oil product for his hair.
Previous to this, I'd not used too much, because the texture of his hair was different from the girls'. But, indeed, he needed more oil than I was putting in his hair, and it helped considerably. In other words, his scalp was too dry and patchy places had formed.

It was difficult at first to get so much of this out as it seemed that the more I combed and brushed, the more I saw...but eventually, his hair 'cleared'.

My cousin's baby was 4 weeks early, and apparently like lots of premies he had very dry skin and cradle cap (or cradle cRap, as my father always called it!). She was told to use shortening - yep - crisco - on his scalp and skin. She resisted - I mean, who wants to grease their baby? Eventually, when nothing else worked, she tried it. You just take a little on your hands, warm it up by rubbing them together, and then just work it into the skin. She says it worked like a charm! And, as a bonus, she said her hands were softer than they've ever been!

Thank you so much for the replies. For some reason, I thought cradle cap only affected newborns. I'll definately use more oil and start trying to brush it out.

On another thread someone suggested I use Jojoba Oil for my baby's scalp and it works really well. I get the oil from Trader Joe's but I'm sure you can get it elsewhere.

We have a Trader Joe's (I love that store). Is it Trader Joe's brand?

The brand is Desert Essence and I think it's the only kind they sell. It's a 4 ounce plastic bottle but a little goes a long way. You won't need to use a lot at one time. Hopefully you'll see a difference.
