Yet another hair question...but about BOYS!
Hello everyone! Yes I have another hair question
but my baby is a boy...8 months old. Currently I'm washing his hair with baby shampoo (moisturizing Huggies something) and I keep it greased with either the "Motions" conditioner cream or "Just for Me" cream stuff (it's clear...almost waxy a little bit). The Motions is lighter so I just kind of see what his hair needs as to which one to use. I would say I put it on his hair about once every two or three days...depending.I don't use a conditioner...and I used to put baby oil in his hair in the bath right before I wash it..then wash it out (I had a couple of my AA tell me to do this..it helped with his scalp..but I don't think it's helping now). My question is that his hair is starting to get long enough and thick enough to have to brush. Of course he HATES it (I use a wide tooth comb). How often do you brush your child's hair? I do it after the bath but then about once every two days or so. I just bought "Motions" brand leave in conditioner and that really helps before brushing...is that okay to put in? His hair is healthy and growing (the back tends to be the driest spot...is that normal?) but I want to make sure I'm doing everything right. At eight months what was your technique (or whenever your child had lots of hair)? did you use a specific shampoo and conditioner? How often do you brush out and grease the hair? Thanks in advance. I know everyone varies so I'm just wanting a wide variety of opinions ![]()

Natalie, from the look of Cooper's pic, he and Josh have about the same amount of hair (except Josh is nearly bald on the back of his head!). He gets a bath 2-3 times a week (his skin is pretty dry) and so far what works for us is to wash his hair once/week. I use the same Huggies shampoo that you do, probably. The other times he's in the tub I drench it with water and put in a bit of leave in conditioner. Our daily routine consists of getting his hair just a bit damp and then I have an olive-oil moisturizer cream that I rub into his curls daily and comb (with a wide tooth comb). It looks great until he starts moving his head around in his crib or on the floor, then it gets a little wild. So far this works for us, but I've only been at it a month!

Natalie is 19 mos. old and has quite a bit of hair. I only wash it about once a week, not every bath. Each morning I spray it with an oil/water spray conditioner to get the tangles out (particularly in the back, the "kitchen") and then put either Carol's Daughter products or Liv (it's a white cream, you can get it at Sally's) in. Then I either put a head band in to keep it out of her face and loose or I put 2 - 4 ponies in it and it stays nicely. I really think the spray does the trick in order to keep it tangle free. Best wishes.

Our youngest baby is just at nine months old. He seems to have more hair than your little one does, Natalie; but, I can attest that he's not too thrilled with me combing it out each day with a very wide toothed comb (even when it's not tangling in the slightest!).
At any rate, I spritz his hair daily with water, then apply the biosilk, then comb out. The biosilk works very well; but I admit, it's very pricey stuff. Now that we have three littles ones using it, it may become too costly. I use the shea butter huggies shampoo/soap on him each night (we shower each night here)....but only wash their hair once a week. (*Sometimes I wash the baby's hair a couple of times, depending on how hot/sweaty, etc he might get, KWIM?) I've tried a ton of products, but admit, I've not done the Carol's Daughter stuff yet (where's the time?). My biggest wonder now, is to decide how short it needs to be once he's a bit older.....but I'll worry about that another day. ![]() Sincerely, Linny |

My youngest son had tons of curly, straight hair down his back. About 6 inches if combed out. I did not do much to his hair, I used a pick, when I wanted the full effect lol Most times I moisturised it, deep down, using my fingers to comb through his hair to enhance his curls. Your DS is still young, and I am not one to expose babies to too much chemicals or herbal based natural products so soon. I like the olive oil and water combo spritz, I use that every day on DDs hair (soft, and fine hair) to keep it moist, and detangle while I comb her hair. I use Oyin whipped Shea butter on her hair a couple times a week, that allergy wise she has been tolerated pretty well by DD (23 months old)
The dry spot is more than likey where he rubs his head, since we are all using the SIDS prevention position, a lot of babies dry out or lose their hair there. Last edited by nickchris : 09-05-2007 at 07:09 AM. |

Okay after listening to everyone here (and to some girlfriends of mine)...I think I'm not using the conditioner cream enough (just the daily conditioner stuff) as I wasn't doing this every day or even every other day. I will try the oil though...it might help and I do hate putting so much gunk in his hair so early. I think the trick seems to be to put it in before brushing to help it...it just always seems like I am putting in too much....
I have to say though, it's hard for me to imagine my little boy in braids at this point...but I can definetely see how it might be easier than brushing every day!! I have to start adding the brushing in the morning to our daily routine I hate hearing him cry...but he has to get used to it (I try to be as gentle as I can). I usually don't over oil it before I brush it, but I think that might make it easier...

I would focus on the dry spot. Old wives tale, but you can cut his hair at one, I waited until little ds was 2, since I liked playing in his hair.

Yeah I have been trying to grease it every day....is there anything you do for that particular spot that is different to help it? It's starting to grow...he just has that "line" on the back of his head, but I see a LOT of babies have this (most actually).
I am definetely not cutting his hair until he is one...I can't imagine the looks I would get at the salon bringing in such a small baby! LOL It's really not that long yet anyways...and I love the way it looks...even those sides that tend to flare out That's my baby!! I'm not ready for him to look like a little boy yet!! LOL

The first cut, does change the look. True, some babies regardless get the Friar Tuck look lol with the rubbed out hair back, and at times the sides. Big ds hair thinned out in the back, little ds was just a hairy one. Just spritz it daily, with a little light olive oil and water daily, keep your old every couple of days schedule for the other part of his hair that is a different texture. The spritz is good for no build up. Personally the just for me stuff is too waxy, and the baby's hair does not need all of that. If he is not mobile yet , place him on his tummy, or in the exacauser to keep his head from rubbing on stuff.

I don't think that spot on the back of the neck is going to get a whole lot better. I have 4 black (and biracial) children and, except for one that is also native american, that "kitchen" (as it is called by AA folks) is always an issue. Spray it well so that a comb can get through it. It is what it is. I don't know about you guys but when I comb my long Italian hair, I get that same spot in the back where I have to be careful because it tangles.

Here's another crazy question- When you guys are mixing your oil/water spritz... how much of each are you mixing together? This is not something that I have ever tried with my dd but I am interested in seeing how it works on her hair.

We use the olive oil and water spritz and it is really great. I also mosturize with Carol's Daughter hair milk, and wash once a week. And boy do we have a Kitchen. I just comb through it (wide toothed comb) and pray for the best. :-)
The hardest part of doing my daughter's hair is chasing her around the house to try and get it done. More for you and Cooper to look forward to ![]()
