Sores on Scalp (X Posted)
Hi! I just noticed in the last week that my 10 month old daughter has somewhat round patches of scaly sores (about the size of a dime) on her scalp. She will scratch off the beige-colored patch (I think it is pretty itchy) and it will be wet and bleeding underneath. I'm waiting for a call from my doctor, but I wanted to know if anyone else has experience with something similar. She is prone to eczema, but I haven't seen much of it. She does currently have a few dry patches on her arms and legs, though. I've been using Carol's Daughter (healthy hair butter, hair milk, black vanilla leave in conditioner) for the last few months and my husband thinks she is having an allergic reaction to this. Thank you so much for any thoughts you can give me on this. I've been worrying... Melissa

It sounds like it could possibly be psoriosis? Hope things get better soon.

Thanks, Denice. I try not to worry, but I know how uncomfortable she is.

I have seborea (sp?) on my scalp and it is exactly how you described. The patches will sometimes get so bad that clumps of hair will fall out. The good news: if I wash my hair every other day with a PX shampoo & use a topical treatment, it is very manageable. I'd take her to a dermatologist as soon as you can.

Thank you, Casey. I will ask my doctor for a referral. It's been so difficult trying to keep her hair moisturized and now I'm afraid to put anything on it.

As a doctor I can tell you that it could be a lot of things, including ringworm (tinea capitis) and each treatment is different. Keep the area clean and dry as much as you can and don't put anything on it. Get an urgent visit with your pediatrician within the next day or so.
Let us know what s/he says.

My 2yo fs had this as well - turned out to be the eczema. I thought he had ringworm, but with some medicated eczema creme it cleared right up. It is very uncomfortable for the kiddos, and they will itch until it bleeds. Could be that there is too much oil in the hair products you are using and you may need to find something that is more cream. Many AA friends recommended Aveno baby - I use it on skin AND scalp and it works wonderfully - better than the prescription lotion.

Thank you all so much for the advice. It turns out to be eczema. I'm using the Aveeno baby on the hair and it seems to be helping a little. I will try not putting anything on it to see if that helps, too. Hopefully it will clear up. The doctor doesn't want to use anything stronger than hydrocortisone (sp) on it, at this point.
