New Here (A Few Questions)

Hi, I'm an AA single mom of an 8yr old DD. I'm getting ready to start IMPACT classes. I hope to adopt a AA boy between 6-8. Has anyone adopted through DFCS in Georgia? I'm curious about the length of the process. Also will I have a hard timing adopting a boy since I'm single? I have already looked into local sports teams and boyscouts. I was able to find all of the documents that I will have to have on their website. I printed them all and filled them out. I'm hoping this will speed up the process. Classes won't start until Sept. 9 so I have some time to kill. I take my CPR this month and my physical this week. Is it possible to have a placement by Christmas?

Not sure about GA (I'm in NY); I adopted 1 son through foster care and I'm in the process of adopting his brother (I'm also single). From what I understand, your marital status can't come into play. Private agencies can specify but government agencies can't.

Janine,

I'm from LA and I adopted through fost/adopt and I think it all depends on how quickly you, the SW, and your agency move.

I started my classes end of July. They classes were completed by Sept. At each class, I was giving the SW paperwork. I began my homestudy as soon as my classes were over. I was certified as a fost/adopt mom on Halloween. I was being considered for my first possible placement by Thanksgiving, but that didn't work out. My son was born on Christmas and came home on Dec. 30. But unlike you, I was asking for a child as young as possible. Jory was 5-days-old when he came home. Your case should move faster since you want an older child.

Best of luck,

Yash
