My daughter's hair
Hi. My daughter will be a year next week. She isat least half AA and possibly Samoan (just saying that by the way she look; we don't know who the father is). She has a lot of hair! So far things have been going all right with her hair except she really hates to sit still for having it done! If I put on a Baby Einstein video it goes a little better but she really hates to have it done.
At first I used baby oil on her hair till she was about 6 months, maybe. For the past few months I've been using California Baby shampoo and conditioner, which I leave in her hair. In between the washings I use a Suave conditioner, grape scented, which to me works better than some of the products especially made for AA kids. It's not sticky like some. I know it's cheap but it works for now! Do you all think this is okay? Sometimes I use a spray-on detangler too. With some of the products I use, her hair looks moist for a while but then looks dry within a few hours. I usually put her hair up in puffballs (2). I sometimes leave it up when she goes to bed. Is this a no-no? I used to use rubber bands (the tiny ones) but they started dissolving in her head or breaking right away when I used them. I thought her hair was just too thick for them but I don't know. So now I just use the stretchy, colored hair things. (don't know what they're called) They hold her hair pretty well if I wrap them around 3 times; they're the little ones. I'm going to enclose a picture of our daughter in a separate post because I had written a message and enclosed pictures and it didn't work so I lost what I'd written. I know I'll have more questions for you all but it's late and I'm tired and can't think of them at the moment. Thanks!! Kathy |

Can't post picture
Hi. I tried to post the picture of Maya but it's too big so I need to figure out how to shrink it first. Sorry.

Oops!
Hi, I got a message saying there was a reply to my post. I accidentally highlighted the wrong URL (is that the right word?) and then it said Your Subscription to that thread has been deleted! Darn it. So I don't know what happened. I got to the board just now a different way and at least I'm able to see the posts from mine back but can't see the post from Redhedded! What should I do?

Hi Kathy,
Let me try this again. I really did not have anything important to say, except that we, too, are California Baby users (shampoo and body wash, and leave in conditioner) and LOVE it!!!! I have done puff balls a few times but usually just leave my daughter's hair in an afro after morning jojoba oil and picking. I found African pure shea butter yesterday at Whole Foods; I did not buy because I wanted to read about it last night. I found many sites dedicated to it and have many friends who use. I think I will get it.
I hope that you can post a picture of your girl. |

This is a picture of my little angel last year. Her hair has grown a lot since this picture was taken. She had just gotten it washed. It is full of tangles when it dries. I learned to comb it out while it was still wet!

Hi! I have a 4 month AA daughter and I want to know what hair care I should be doing now. I have no idea what is best for her and I want to learn stuff early so it won't hit all at once and we do not know what to do.
Thank YOU |

HI
I love this thread I just started using Frizzee product line and have really liked it. My daughters hair is really long (probably 18 inches +) I have never braided it. We usually finger comb it out (with detangler and water spritz) and then put it in one or two ponies (with soft pony holders) or a "baby" pony (pulling up the sides and leaving it long in back) She wakes up every morning with a large knot in the back. I had been wondering how old before braiding is OK. She will be 4 this summer. I think I will start hunting for a stylist/teacher! Thanks again for all the tips |

I would suggest that you try the Just for Me Products.
At 18 months old stay away from extensions. They put too much tension on the natural hair, and the actual extension hair (synthetic or "human") can cause allergic recaction to such a tender scalp. The key to African American hair is moisture. Just for me has a great daily moisturizer. Also you may want to find an African American who can cornrow your daughters hair every week, then all you have to do is apply moisturizer to her scalp every other day or so (it depends on how dry your daughters scalp is). When you wash your daughters hair be sure to put a little detangler (I think Just For Me makes some) or a light conditioner on her hair also. If you dont have any African American friends, maybe you could visit a African American beauty salon in your city and ask for suggestions. STAY AWAY FROM CHEMICALS! At this young age. Someone may suggest that you give your daughter a relaxer of some sort. I would definetly suggest that you wait. Oh I have another suggestions, are there any little african american girls at your daughters day care? Maybe ask their mothers what she does to their childs hair and ask her to show how to do your child's hair. I hope this was helpful. Post some pitures and let us know how it turns out!
