Liberian Adoption
We are adopting two little girls from Liberia both one-year old. It has been a long process because of the war. I know if the country ever settles down their will be a lot of orphans. We are using Plan loving adoptions in Oregon. I know of several families who I have met their children from there. They are beautiful.

A good person to talk to is...
Contact Cheryl Carter-Shotts at Americans for African Adoptions. She has been doing humanitarian and adoption work in Liberia for quite some time, and is extremely knowledgeable about many African countries; her own son is from Mali and she has a deep, deep commitment to the welfare of children in Africa. Here is the contact information:
Americans for African Adoptions, Inc. 8910 Timberwood Drive Indianapolis, IN 46234-1952 The previous poster mentioned that she is using PLAN Loving Adoptions Now. PLAN was founded by a very religious woman, Ann Scott, with many children. PLAN's contact information is: PLAN Loving Adoptions Now P.O. Box 667 McMinnville, OR 97128 |

On Oct 9th, 2003 we received our beautiful daughters into our arms!! We went to Ghana to get them. It was quite the journey. The girls are so awesome!!
We have started the whole process over again to get Gracious' twin sister. |

Hi j. Redhedded from Texas here.
I have not "seen" you here in some time. I noticed that you are using PLAN, from Oregon, right? I would be very interested in following any information that you are willing to share during your journey. Lishop from another thread used PLAN. Congratulations!!!
Congratulations drmd! So happy for you. I still have my packet from AFAA of information requested more than two years ago before my daughter's arrival, after some bumps in the domestic journey. Would you be willing to share why you chose PLAN over other agencies. Thanks for any information. |

Does anyone know what the average tome period for adoption is? I know that the war changes things. Also, for those of you who chose to travel, coupld you tell me about your experience.

We are told by plan that it will be 4 to 6 months after the I600A comes through. We expect the I600A to take 30 days. So, including the homestudy, the process will take about 8 months.

We found out we will not be Gracious' twin sister. The aunt and uncle have decided to keep her. Yes we are sad, yet at the same time I am glad she is with part of her birth family.
We do hope in the future to be able to reunite them. |

This is lishop (Melissa). drmd and I know each other through PLAN - we brought Maya home just one week later. Now adoptions should be taking about 8 months total, ours took about 15 because of the war. When adopting in Africa remember that things can change in an instant. We expected to have Maya here in Jan to March of 2003 and she got here in October. Well worth it though - these Liberian kids are very special.
For the person who asked about travel, my husband picked her up in Ghana and only was there 2 days. He also escorted 3 kids from Angels Haven (Maya was from PLAN - ACFI). The trip is very fast because the paperwork for the adoption is all complete, some already have visas, some parents go to Liberia for the actual visa interview. West Africa will be a shock to most, but gives you an idea of what your children would have grown up in. Feel free to email me - lishoprah@hotmail.com Melissa |

Liberian adoption
I was so excited to see your post! I, too, am interested in adopting from Liberia, and was told by the orphanage I have been working with that it is safe to travel there, but evidently Pastor Eric is the only one who feels that way! Has anyone gone there lately, and how did it seem? There seems to be a great need for expediency to get those children out of there, and I would like to help, but i am getting a lot of mixed messages.
