We're in process right now ourselves. What I'm hearing from folks is that if you expect it to take nine months from start to finish (including homestudy), you'll be pleasantly surprised when it's less. We are anticipating 6-7 months from when we decided to adopt to having our little one home.

There is one agency that seems to take longer than the others. PM me for details if you'd like.

Our process was just over 5 months from start to finish which is way faster than we could have ever imagined.

We have info about our process posted on our website:

Timeline for Canadians

For all you Canadians on this site:
We are from Canada and the timeline is much longer. On average the adoption takes 18 months, but has been known to take as long as 24. As we do not have an Embassy in Ethiopia the dossier goes through Kenya, lengthening the process.

I have recently learned some more information in regards to timelines with Ethiopia. A good question to ask a prospective agency is if you can complete and submit your dossier, and wait for a referral, before you receive your I171H. That language probably seems incomprehensible to folks new to adoption.

Basically, the question is if you can submit your dossier before you have US CIS approval, a process that can take three-four months, even longer if you have to wait for your homestudy first.

Some agencies will let you submit your dossier while you are waiting for CIS approval--PM me for details if you'd like.
