Anyone adopted from Liberia?

My husband and I are seriously considering Liberia and I was wondering if any one here might have experience with this war torn country? We are thinking about going through Acres of Hope. Anything you have that might help our looking into this country/agency would be great! Thank you.

We are currently adopting from Liberia. It has been a very quick and easy process. We sent our first piece of paperwork in for our home study on June 21 and expect to have our son home by Thanksgiving. Our agency has been great. A little hard to contact at times because they are such a small organization, but we learned quickly it wasn't because they weren't on top of things, just super busy taking care of babies and making many, many adoptions happen. They always return phone calls when there is something to report.

vamom, thanks for getting back to me. Congratulations on your son! How old is he? That is a super quick int. adoption time, wow. Which agency did you use? We are trying to decide shether to go through an agency or directly through the orphanage Acres Of Hope. We were concerned going through the orphanage that they might not be as proffesional as an agency and that communication might be difficult. I'd love to hear a little more from you, thanks!

Hello! I was adopted from Liberia by a family that had 5 of their own children, and traveled there as missionairies. I was basically orphaned and resided with an aunt when the adoption took place, and though it has been many years ago - things have turned out well. I was two years old, my hair was wild and of course I did not speak any english. We traveled to the USA via boat and settled in Oregon. I grew up as the only black child in my Elementary school and throughout most of middle school and high school but this never really posed any problems for me. I always did well in school, I even skipped a grade in the third grade.....I was on rally and on student council and grew up pretty normal. I imagine that these days there probably are not the same race concerns that there was then, but I wanted to assure you that It is only an issue if you make it one. I feel very fortunate that I was adopted, and can't imagine what my life might have played out like if I were still in Liberia. Best of luck to you. cd

We are in the process of adopting two children from Liberia, a 5 year old boy and a nine year old girl. We're hoping to have them home in 6 months.

Liberian Adoption

Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me the name of the agency you are using?

Are you still on track to have your son by Thanksgiving? How old is he?

Thank you for your time.

Michele

We are using Acres of Hope. Our baby is almost 4 months old. We have heard of several families who have gotten babies with ease. It is even easier to get a toddler. We are unable to travel so it looks like we will get him in December. If we could travel, our I600 could process in a day or 2 in Liberia. Since we can't, we are planning on it taking a month to process over here. We expect to hear any day that our adoption is final and we can file that paperwork. It is still a very fast process. If we get him by Christmas, it will have only been 6 months from the beginning of our home study. I'd be more than happy to send you an email or pm with more info about our AoH experience.

vamom, thank you so much for your email. I got it much later after you sent it and am sorry I am just now getting back to you. We have been wonderfully busy with our two little boys and starting the adoption process for a young toddler in liberia. That is great to hear your adoption is going smoothly and fast for you! My husband and possibly me will be traveling because as you stated you are able to get your child home sooner and my husband really wants to see Africa. I wanted to tell you about a great yahoo group that is specifically for those who are adopting from Liberia. I have gained so much knowledge and encouragement there.

We are adopting through Acres of Hope too.
Jenny

Adoption from Liberia

We adopted two boys, ages 4 and 7, from Liberia 3.5 years ago. If you have any questions about how things are after they arrive and about adjustments etc, feel free to email me. It's been so long that I am pretty rusty on the actual process of doing the adoption, so I wouldn't be of any help there.

child perference

I know this will probably sound stupid to ask, but is it possible to still have availably to list what kind of child you are looking for. (I.e.: sex, race, health)
Also what's the % that these babies will have a risk to have aids. Is it okay to go into the situation already saying you cannot raise a child with this type of serious health issue?
thanks!

If any of you would please pm me with info regarding which agencies you've used I would really appreciate it. WE are looking at adopting from Africa and it's just so hard to choose an agency. I would love some reccomendations.
