Sierra Leone is now open for adoptions
This forum is completely dead. But, I thought I would put updated and accurate information here.
Sierra Leone reopened last January with new adoption laws. There are several adoption agencies now working in Sierra Leone. The time frame is anywhere from about 8-9 months to as much as 2 years, depending on the agency you are working with. But, adoptions are legal in Sierra Leone and they are processing again. There are many, many orphans in Sierra Leone who desperately need families. The civil war has been over since 2001 and the country is rebuilding but it will take time. In addition to adopting, several of the adoption agencies have sponsorships for children that are not eligible for adoption but provide for basic needs and education. You would need only contact a reputable agency that is placing children from Sierra Leone and ask about the sponsorship programs. |

I wonder if you can direct me to further information on adoption from Sierra Lione, and if you know of any specific agencies that work in that country. Thank you for your help!

Sierra Leone
We are going to the county courthouse next week to finally legally adopt our new children from
Sierra Leone. They came to us in September 2003 after a wait of nearly two years. next steo will be Social Security numbers, in-state birth certificates, and citizenship, I guess. We adopted through PLAN of Oregon. |

We have one boy that has just returned from Sierra Leone that was adopted a week ago. We have 5 more kids that are in the process of being adopted from Sierra Leone. Two of them are our own. I have a fair amount of information on the process as well as contacts. These adoptions are reputable and are being done at a very low cost making it affordable to bring these children to the states.

How long did the field investigation by the US Embassy take? It is my understanding that the Visa process has become quite lengthy due to the high amount of fraud in Salone. There have been more denials of Visas than approvals so it is good to hear of SOMEONE having a favorable outcome. |

Its my understanding that field investigations are currently taking 3-6 MONTHS, due to lack of staffing in Salone. But, I am hearing of a trickle of children coming out, slowly, slowly, slowly.
In our case, we went to India for this current adoption. Perhaps someday we will bring another child out of Sierra Leone. But, for now we weren't getting back into that mess when there were no assurances of actually getting children home right now. |

Just a quick note--You must travel to Sierra Leone to appear before the court before your adoption can be approved. You may want to check the travel advisories before considering adoption from this country.
