WOW! I guess I aam the last one to the party here! My DS called me MAMA for the first moth we were home then switched to mommy. I guess I did not realize that they may have identified the care givers as MAMA. Occasionally he slips back into the MAMA thing. I wonder if it is during times of stress for him?

Great discussion...so let's expand a little farther...
What if you don't mind being called mama and do not like mommy? In my family, the mothers are Moma (a special spelling passed down from mother to daughter). Any harm with that? We'll be adopting from foster care...so I don't know if they hold the same meanings??? Thanks!

With Pads, ANY terms ruffled my feathers and sounded sickly sweet. Now Anything she chooses to call me, I enjoy. It helps to ONLY refer to your spouse (and vice versa) in the terms you wish the child to use.
For a while after a BAMBI movie addiction, my dd called me "mother" in bambi's exact tone...THAT was wierd.

My son is 5, and has been home 3 years. I was mama. But now, it varies, by his mood. It could be MA, MOM, sometimes even Mother. But, you know he rarely calls me mommy. HMMM. . . I guess I never much thought of it.

Same with me and my mom...Moma is the most common...but there are Ma, mother, etc...now that I'm grown, especially.
However, mommy was NEVER said...so I guess it depends upon the culture the child came from and what you desire the child to refer to you.
