What about all this infant medication recall?
Reading through our paper yesterday I didn't see anything about it being tainted or anything along those lines. Everything written about the voluntary recall was because parents were dosing it incorrectly on their own.
Do you think they should recall the infant medication because of this? |

No, I don't think they should recall all of the medication because pepole are too dumb to not ask their physician or pharmacist what dose they should be giving. It says right on the bottle that you should consult a physican before giving these medications to children 2 and under - so do what the directions say! Of course it is absolutely terrible that children have died due to overdoses, however I would not blame it on the manufacturer of the medication.

It sounds like if you do the dosing right, everything should be fine. Is that right? And if so, how is that the manufacturers' fault that people don't dose right?

I agree. Why should everyone have to deal with it being taken off the shelf because there are parents who don't bother to take the time????
I also saw a segment stating that none of these drugs do any better than a placebo??? THAT'S a hard one for me to believe, simply because on more than one stuffy night, I've been glad for dimetapp and anti-cough meds, KWIM? But, I have to say too......when I need to know, I call my pharmacist to know the exact dose. (I honestly think sometimes, my pediatrician recommends too high of a dose for the babies, and I'm really conservative on giving this kind of stuff too.) Still........I've read in too many places where parents have given their children/babies benedryl (and meds similar to) JUST to make them sleep???? THAT bothers me; and makes me wonder if these are the same scenarios that have brought about the problems leading to the recalls, KWIM? Meds are for illnesses (and symptoms thereof) ....NOT because one may be tired of dealing with their child/baby! |

Amen, Linny!! The bottom line is that most medication is also a poison, and should be used with caution and only when necessary, per doctor's instructions. Common sense. |

One thing I hate about over-the-counter medicines is that you always have to call to get the dose for children under 2 (sometimes under 6). I always call the doctor, though, because I would never want to guess about the correct dose.
None of the recalled products have ever done much good for my kids anyway. Recently the doctor has been giving us a great prescription medicine, Rynatan, for runny noses. It's a bit more expensive but it works great. Our pediatrician actually put a medicine dosing chart on their website. It shows dosages by child's weight for ibuprofen, tylenol and benadryl. That helps some, but it doesn't include the pseudophedrine medicines like Pediacare. |

I think I would actually trust a pharmacist more than a pediatrician when it comes to giving out doses. Pharmacists deal with medication everyday and have dosing charts for every medication behind the counter with them. Doctors get their inforamtion from drug reps.
Just my opinion. |

Pretty scarey huh? I saw the same thing. I guess the only safe thing to do is recall the medication. If it saves the lives of children it is worth the recall. Some of this medication I have gotten scripts for like benedryl. They say it does not work on children under 6 but yet my baby was 1 when I got it from the doctor?? YIKES.. S
