SSI/Group Home where to start?

We've been advised by our psych and therapist to begin the paperwork gauntlet for getting our 16 YO qualified for SSI and eventual placement in a group home once he becomes an adult. Anybody have experience with this or advice what to do, not to do?

He's learning disabled with a genetic disorder that carries some psychological issues. We tried a work program through Goodwill this summer that included classroom life/work skills hoping it would be a positive start in the work place. He's failed miserably. He is incapable of recognizing social cues or interacting appropriately most of the time and by the end of the first week was being taunted by the underprivileged segment of the program, then accused of sexual harassment for making an inappropriate comment about a co-worker.

Thanks!

Steve

I would post this over in the special needs forum, as you may get responses from a number of people who have been there and done that... Unfortunately I have no advice, but hoping you find some answers. Good luck!

Our daughter is 16. She was acting out, drinking, sex, pot, running away, etc. We adopted her throught DSS. We went to them for help. They have a dept called Adoption Preservation. To make a long story short, they have financed her being placed temporarily in a group home for therapy. It has been a huge help. I don't know if any of this can help, but let me know if you have any questions.
